Learning to Fly

Diary of a PPL Student: Part 2

Learning to fly to somewhere, ongoing battles with weather, and eventually - the pay off!

44 Back and Forth
In which I try not to confuse myself with the intricacies of overhead joins and fly back and forth between the airfield and a few lcoal landmarks.

45 Time to spare--go by air!
In which I circle overhead and around and down some more, forget something daft, and appreciate a pretty end to the day.

46 A visit to maintenance!
In which I fly a mildly poorly aeroplane to Haverfordwest for a "while you eat" fix, and look at the insides of clouds.

47 Out on my own
In which I go all by my lonesome to far-flung Haverfordwest for the world's fastest coffee and back again.

48 Under the hood
In which I fly around for an hour without seeing sky or ground and discover why "Thou shalt not fly into cloud" is a really very good idea.

49 Lines in the sky
In which I lament the intractable nature of January weather, and fly around for an hour trying to figure out where I am with the aid of invisible electro-magical wizardy.

50 Flying over the fold
In which I finally defeat the intractable nature of January, February and March weather, and fly around for several hours mostly knowing where I am and discover I do still remember which end of an aeroplane to point at the wind.

51 Frozen Forumites
In which I attend another "Take a Student Flying" fly-in with the usual suspects from the Flyer Magazine Forum, and am impressed by the detours people will make to fetch a Leia!

52 Soggy circuits
In which miserable weather drives me back to the circuit where I have a reasonably eventful refresher of this round and round business.

53 Rainbows at Gloucester
In which I troop all the way to Gloucester all by my own self, via a look-see at Shobdon.

54 What happens if the engine stops?
In which I aim a glide at various bits of the Welsh countryside.

55 Revising above the clouds
In which I revisit general handling and admire the view in the process.

56 Radio Practical
In which I fly an imagainary aeroplane for an hour talking to various (almost) imaginary air trafficers.

57 QXC
In which I finally beat the weather and get the long awaited "qualifying cross country" done. Not much left now!

58 Window Shopping
In which I get another go in a pretty aeroplane, look at lots of other pretty aeroplanes and chat with assorted pre--erm--personable pilots!

59 Another spot of revision
In which I brush up on everything I can think of to brush up on, and start thinking up ways to avoid thinking of test day!

60 Skills Test
In which, after a few false starts, I manage to convince the weather o cooperate and the examiner that I'm fit to be turned loose on an unsuspecting sky.
